THE PURPOSE OF PRAYER WALKING
Prayer walking is a simple strategy to move the church into the community for the purpose of penetrating a neighbourhood or a target area.
OBJECTIVE
- To bless. âThrough the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is â Prov 11:11.
- Open our eyes to the needs of the people.
- Serving the community as needs are identified.
Praying with insight onsite
1. Praying
- This is a directed, intercessory prayer, not a devotional walk.
- It is intentional praying.
- It is best done in groups of at least two people.
2. Onsite
- Praying in the very places that you expect your prayers to be answered.
3. With insight
Responsive Insight
- Prayerwalking trains you in observation.
- The sights, sounds and smell help engage both your body and mind in your prayers.
- It helps you gain an understanding of the culture and the heartbeat of the community.
Research Insight
- The history of a place will direct us to significant spots and help us understand why certain problems or patterns persist in an area.
Revealed Insight
- Based on the Word of God along with the revealing work of the Holy Spirit.
- Know and understand what the Word of God says about relevant issues.
- Seek God for appropriate portions of Scripture.
- The Word then comes alive when prayed on the streets.
- Responsive, researched, and revealed insights often blend to fortify our prayers. It is exciting to walk the streets with open eyes and willing feet.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR PRAYER WALKS
Please Note: If there is any person you are unwilling to forgive or any habitual sin in your life, resolve these matters before participating in Prayer walks.
- Conduct prayer walks in groups of 2-4 people. Wear jogging or walking clothes so as not to create suspicion by the neighbours.
- Before you start your walk, pray together in a private place such as one of your homes:
- Prepare yourselves by coming into the presence of God with a time of praise to God.
- Confess all known sin to God and, if necessary, to one another.
- Claim that you are protected by the full armour of God. Eph 6:10-17
- Pray for the filling of the Holy Spirit, for discernment and for wisdom in whom, how and what to pray for as you walk.
- Pray for protection for yourselves as you walk, for your family members, and your homes.
3. Go together to the starting point of your prayer walk and:
- Make sure that everybody knows exactly where to go.
- Make sure that everybody is present before you begin.
- Claim the streets you will walk for God.
- Ask God to give them compassion for the lost. Matt 14:14
- Ask The Lord to:
- Pour out His Holy Spirit upon the lost.
- Convict them of their sin.
- Lead them to repentance.
- Bring circumstances and events into their lives to draw them to Christ, and
- Bring someone into their lives to lead them to Christ.
4. Start walking; do not walk fast, but keep moving. Examine each house. Look for clues to a familyâs lifestyle and priorities.
5. Pray for each house or establishment.
- Claim each home for Jesus Christ.
- Pray for the salvation of each member of every household.
- Ask the Lord to rebuke the work of satan against them and that the blinding of the evil one be
- Ask the Lord to remove any strongholds of the evil one in household members' lives as you feel led by the Spirit.
- Pray that their eyes may be opened to the truth and that they would be responsive to the ministry of the Body of Christ (or any specific strategy that you are planning to use).
- Pray for a man or woman of peace that the Lord would prepare to respond to your ministry and be used to penetrate the neighbourhood with the Gospel.
6. If you experience a strange or evil feeling, note the location, command the evil one to leave your presence, and move on. Report this to your leadership, and corporately seek the Lordâs guidance regarding what the problem is and how to proceed.
7. Close in a time of praise to God for what He has done and will do. Praise Him for His victory upon the cross, the defeat of the evil one, and the victory he will bring to the community.
